The energy sector is transforming fast. Utilities are shifting towards renewables and chasing carbon neutrality. Demand for secure and sustainable energy is projected to surge by 50% over the next three decades.
In the midst of this change, Énergir—a top Canadian energy utility serving over half a million customers across Quebec and Vermont—stands out. With a vision to shift toward clean energy and cut greenhouse gas emissions by one million tons by 2030, Énergir knew it had to evolve, especially in their approach to procurement and sourcing.
So, Énergir partnered with Accenture to transform their procurement processes and technology using SAP Ariba—a comprehensive suite of cloud-based tools designed to optimize costs and spending. Now, Énergir enjoys a seamless, integrated system that connects sourcing, contracting and procure-to-pay activities. It drives greater efficiency, cost savings and innovation, setting the stage for more mature capabilities and strategies to power its sustainability and global objectives into the future.
A robust digital core is essential for any transformation, and that’s exactly where Énergir started. Our work with the utility began by migrating their operations to SAP S/4HANA, which enabled everything that followed.
Building on that strong cloud foundation, the procurement transformation unfolded in three phases. In the first phase, we established essential procurement capabilities—modernizing processes, defining clear buying channels, and mapping out the implementation journey for SAP Ariba. Next, we digitized the source-to-contract process and crafted a detailed supplier enablement strategy. We even completed an organizational design and impact assessment to ensure the changes would unlock the greatest future potential. Finally, we updated the procure-to-pay, supplier performance management, and supplier onboarding processes, so suppliers were properly vetted and ready to meet company’s standards.
SAP Ariba has completely transformed Énergir’s procurement operations. The utility now enjoys a cohesive, integrated system that offers an end-to-end view of the entire workflow—reducing manual errors through standardization and automation while providing better visibility, controls and reporting.
Enabled by a solid foundation in both technology and new ways of working, Énergir can continue to adapt for a clean-energy future. Their new SAP capabilities not only make them a more agile and resilient player in a fluctuating market, but also a better partner to their suppliers.
